Winding down at the factory If you're wondering why we haven't answered your email it's because we're still closed, and will be until the 12th.

Here are a few photos from the day before we closed when we were winding down. You can see the new office, the kitchen area leading into the factory (yes, those are Vespa floorboards), part of the pickup/delivery area somewhat pruned after numerous orders went out before closing (yes, that's a big pile of whitewall tires), the main factory floor all quiet, and then photos of some new machinery: a new welding machine and a new press.

Happy New Year!
Feb. 5, 2008, 1:37 PM

New Year's Party

Once again it is New Year's here, or it will be in 2 days, and then the Year of the Rat. Gifts are being given, large bonuses have been paid, dinners are being eaten at company parties, and late tomorrow night offerings will be made to ensure an auspicious year.

And we, of course, are closed for holidays until the 12th. Happy New Year!

(Posted by a UK shop owner:) If you're buying make sure you get the ScootRS type (pressure cast) as opposed to the Sterling/SPAQ type (sand cast) - we have seen one of the pepperpot style with holes crack on the thinnest part of the hub and also a standard outboard one crack the mounting lugs (which resulted in the wheel rim parting from the hub after it happened - both were Sterling/SPAQ - just thought I'd better share this info with you.

Some resellers in the UK and elsewhere offer the cheapest Asian local market lookalike items they can find - and still ask much more than for high quality items. Beware of weak sandcast disc kits, stainless rims that crack, and other low-end “Spaq/Sterling” labeled lookalike items at some resellers.

Price and quality comparison with low-end Vietnam market knockoffs at a UK reseller and original ScootRS items, Feb. 1, 2008 (£=$2):

  UK reseller ScootRS
Disc brake
  • $370 (£185)
  • lookalike of scootRS
  • poor sandcast, bondo/paint
  • low-end copy hydraulics
  • $275
  • original scootRS
  • high-pressure cast, powdercoated, all done inhouse
  • original Nissin hydraulics
Tuned exhausts
  • $298 (£149)
  • lookalike of scootRS
  • ragged sections often block flow
  • $149
  • original scootRS
  • proven performance
Tubeless rim
  • $100 (£50)
  • lookalike of scootRS
  • no safety bead, rough welds
  • $39
  • original scootRS
  • safety bead, reviewed over 3 issues of Scootering

Oh, yeah, the email
Feb. 1, 2008, 8:17 AM

We forgot to post an update the other day that our internet was back working again two days later. Too busy answering the hundreds of emails that had piled up...

From a “remote location”
Jan. 26, 2008, 7:39 AM

The new office Despite these photos of the new office that we moved into yesterday at our factory, this post is coming from a secret “remote location” because the network/internet in the new office is not working yet - as it was supposed to. Unfortunately that means no email communication at least until Monday after they trace where the problem is inside the wall somewhere, or change the cable ends, or appease some local god. So if we appear to have gone silent, well, we have, but we're still here.

As you can see from the photos, the first office room is still empty, there's no sofa yet for the boss to sleep on, and a few things remain to be done in the office and in the new kitchen area. But now that our elevator is painted fire-engine red, no doubt the future is ours to claim.

More scootRS factory expansion
Jan. 19, 2008, 10:25 AM

More scootRS factory expansionThe never-ending process of expansion continues here. If you haven't been following the story, here's the recap. Last year we posted about our move to a new, much larger factory so we'd have more room to make scooter parts for you. Then in August we posted about needing more room still and taking over an adjoining building to use as an office and warehouse for all those scooter parts. Presently we have a large U-shaped building, with an L being the factory and the rest being the warehouse/packing/shipping and a small office.

In fact, though, we have always had a main office at another location in town. The factory is a bit outside of town and the office there is smaller, as you can see in this photo from the 2nd post noted above. Well, now finally we are combining the offices and thus we have to expand the little office at the factory, which wasn't so nice anyway. That will streamline things and allow for the next phase. (There's always a “next” phase.)

For now you can enjoy the photos above for an idea of the current mess and marvel at half the disaster area that is the packing/shipping side with the little office temporarily moved over there (the other half of the photo is an untold number of large boxes). We're actually fixing up one whole side of the building, from the street to the factory floor. The office will expand to take over most of it, and a new ceiling is being installed along with all new wiring. Then we're fixing up the washrooms and building a kitchen area, which you can see as you look down towards the factory entrance, or back from it. (Compare with the old photo.) One nice thing is built-in network cable throughout, over to the shipping area and up to the 2nd floor of the warehouse as well, so no computer wires anywhere.

Once painted it should be quite nice and we can move everything there. We'll post more after we're done. On the factory side, we've got some new machinery coming in, but more on that later too.

New Year's Eve in Saigon
Jan. 2, 2008, 5:27 PM

We ventured out into the New Year's Eve scooter madness that is Saigon. Eventually we arrived at our destination. In previous years a block party would never have been allowed, but this was the scene at the centre of it all about 12:15:

2008 Scooter Calendar
Dec. 22, 2007, 8:31 AM

2008 Scooter Calendar If you haven't noticed yet, we have our 2008 Scooter Calendar available.

Our scootRS calendar is not your Italian grandpa's boring old sepia-toned, nostalgia-dripping sweetness, it's the hottest thing in scootering after the sparkplug! It's modern fashion models with classic Vespa and Lambretta scooters. Here's a quick video clip from the making of it.

This year's calendar is a desktop version on high quality glossy paper. It's actually a 14 month calendar, so you can begin using it in Dec. 2007 and into Jan. 2009.

And once again, it's free with any $100 purchase!
