Free Vespa scooter
May. 3, 2003, 1:58 PM

If you take a look through the Scooter News stories in the archive, it makes you wonder if anyone actually buys a new Vespa. Most every story is about a free scooter from Vespa. Apparently, if you just have the patience to wait long enough, you've got a good shot at a free one somewhere.

Towards Chau Doc, Cambodia
Apr. 28, 2003, 5:48 PM

When we last tuned in, Richard was madly veering off towards Chau Doc and on to Cambodia after some scootRS upgrades to his VLB. Would the bike make it? Would he make it? Let's see:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Just wanted to let you know I made it back, no problems. The scooter is much improved -- runs like a Camry. I rode out to Long Xuyen and then to Chau Doc, and after a bit of exploration, took a boat from there to Neak Luong in Cambodia. In total about 600k for the trip. Should have done something about the hard seat too. [....]
If I get my act together I'll put up a few pictures on the web, including one of the guy in Neak Luong who carried the Vespa up a steep plank and then the muddy riverbank on his back, holding it by the floorboards.
Cheers and thanks again,
Rich
Scooting to Cambodia
Apr. 17, 2003, 10:50 PM
And he's off. -Scooting to Cambodia.
We don't get many visitors driving in from other countries. In fact, this was the first. Richard endured 9 hours from Phnom Penh on his VLB, somehow convincing Customs to let him bring his scooter into Vietnam, and stopped by for some parts. We ended up converting him to a 12v CDI system with halogen lights, new shocks, glovebox, rear spare, and some other goodies unavailable there.
He's now off back home to Phnom Penh via the ferry up the Mekong at Chau Doc. Good luck!
DWR Vespa
Mar. 14, 2003, 7:57 AM
DWR (Design Within Reach) features an interview with one of their designers, who happens to be a Vespa fan:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I'm into the Vespa because it's a major 20th-century design object, they're fun to ride, and I don't see the need to be one of ten people at the red light driving a Volvo station wagon. Yaaawwwnn. Vintage Vespas are so classic, a value in a lot of ways—they last for years and maintain this timeless aesthetic, like a lot of the designs we carry at DWR. Also, the diverse group of people that are truly interested in these cool machines make it exceedingly worthwhile.
