Keihin PWK flatslide carb review

Great carb review in Scootering's new Jan./Feb. issue.

We've been arguing for a little while that people should replace their overpriced Dell'Orto carbs with a better and cheaper pattern Keihin PWK flatslide carb, or a pattern Mikuni on stock bikes. Some people were dubious without having seen proof. Well, here you go.

Scootering compared a pattern PWK carb - not ours, but based on the exact same Keihin PWK design - with a Dell'Orto PHBH on a TS1, and with a VHSB flatslide on a 205. The Dell'Ortos are more expensive, but in both cases Scootering preferred the PWK.

On a TS1 225 with PM pipe, they write:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The results on the dyno were fairly remarkable. Peak power was pretty much the same, but the [PWK] performed dramatically better through most of the power curve. The [PWK] had at least an extra horsepower from 3,000 rpm right up to 7,000 rpm and [...] it also had better over-rev performance and gave an extra hosepower at 9,000 rpm. On the road, the [PWK] made the engine much more crisp, pulling eagerly from much lower revs and on much lower throttles. It was easy to feel the extra power at low revs, and also the keenness to rev a bit harder.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

One a 205 racer they compared a 34mm pattern PWK with a vastly more expensive 37mm VHSB:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
again the performance was quite impressive given the price of the carb. The [PWK] matched the Dell'Orto's performance at every point except the torque peak (7,300 rpm), and bettered it at both lower rpm (5,500 rpm) and at peak power (8,000 rpm).
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

It is also noteworthy what they confirm about set up. Scootering writes that the 30mm Dell'Orto PHBH “proved much harder to set up.” In neither case did they even tinker with the needle on the pattern PWK, only the jets! On the dyno they saw that the “carb jetting is very stable throughout the rev range, which is very good for such a simply set-up carb.”

So, what are you waiting for? Only $119 with manifold, choke conversion, and everything, or $89 carb only.
