Vespa carb kits
Oct. 31, 2002, 6:33 PM

We've posted a sale on all our pattern Keihin PWK flatslide carbs and kits. We've also posted our two Vespa kits as well. Rev up your Lambretta or Vespa. Perfect for kitted bikes.

-And if you only know Dell'Orto carbs, think vastly better than a stock carb, better than a roundslide PHBH (Malossi, Polini), and superior performance and a cheaper price than a VHSA. Don't be fooled into thinking you are getting more by paying more.

Vietnam fire, final word
Oct. 30, 2002, 10:10 PM

A final word. We learned this evening: that the other side of the building in our picture is the worst one; that where you see the blue lettering on the front side of the building is where a drain pipe ran up the wall, which people used to escape to a lower building until it broke; that there wasn't enough water available, so one fire hose was run across the street into the swimming pool shown in the picture and drained it all day; that two of the expats who died had just recently moved to Vietnam to start a new way of life.

Vietnam fire result
Oct. 30, 2002, 2:15 PM

Today we went down to survey the damage from the fire. We must say, from the safety of a block and a day away, it doesn't look as bad as it sounds. -And it sounds horrendous. So far no one we know was hurt, though the death toll climbs even higher. A large part of a square block is gutted. A gas leak is suspected, but who knows. Photos of the building, the crowd, and, from a fluke picture of a CNN report, a friend helping out. (Does the swimming pool look vaguely familiar? See the archive.)

The city has closed all entertainment facilities for three days of mourning.

Vietnam fire
Oct. 29, 2002, 9:58 PM

Yes, we said it was an awful day. We recall that now.

Driving to the shop today we saw a massive, hideous plume of black smoke coming from the downtown area, a few minutes away. A call from a girlfriend explained that it was across the street from her office. She had returned home to worried parents. It sounded like a bad fire. We worked and came home, then worked on the computer.

It is evening now. We don't watch TV or listen to the radio, as it is in a foreign language. But someone has arrived. He tells us in words we think we understand: a rival has likely blown up a competing nightclub. (This has happened before.) An entire square block has burned down. 50 people have died so far.

What?

-A friend who works across the street from the fire was seen on BBC carrying someone. -Another left the area when people were seen hanging from windows on upper stories.

One expat is reported dead, maybe someone we know in one way or another. Friends and acquaintances could be amongst the dozens of others. -So far...

Rainy, traffic, awful...

And busy. The amazing shopcam is back.

Speaking of rain, which leads to rust...we've added a few more floorboard replacement pieces. Weld your little heart out.

Vietnam traffic vs. clutch cable
Oct. 16, 2002, 10:49 PM

What you do not want: to enter rush-hour, stop-and-go, arm-to-arm traffic in a country of 12,000,000 scooters, then have your clutch cable snap and have to drive across town without a clutch. That is not fun. Possible, but not fun.

Email viruses
Oct. 14, 2002, 10:50 AM

Email 1: There are a lot of email viruses about now. Our system is always up-to-date and scans as clean, but we get some emails from others saying we've sent a virus. The problem we believe is that some viruses scan computers for email addresses, then use them to fake the sender's address, so the emails aren't really coming from us. If you get one, right-click and check the header info, and compare with a regular email from us.

°°

Email 2: There is a lot of spam about, too. We have filters to auto-delete messages with common spam phrases. Also, anything with a weird subject, or no subject, or simply “Hi” is deleted. Please use a subject that explains your email and don't use common spam or virus phrases.

Miss Uyen
Oct. 11, 2002, 3:36 PM

Miss Uyen, whom you may know from answering your emails here at scootRS, is leaving the company after several years. She was with us from almost the beginning, was a great employee, and we'd like to wish her well in her new job. Her replacement will be Ms. Vui, which means “happy,” so hopefully that's a good sign as to how the changeover will go.

Today we all went for lunch. A photo below of Uyen and her going away present, along with a few words from the lady herself:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I'd like to say thanks for all my boss and my colleagues have done for me, and all the nice words from our customers. It makes me so happy. I'll miss you. You can contact me anytime on my new cell phone. ;-)
We had Starbucks with a Lambretta below, now we have Jack on a Vespa. It appears as though Jack were cut off and is voicing his road-rage displeasure. -Just an interpretation.
Logo
Oct. 3, 2002, 11:09 AM
You might notice that our logo has changed slightly from “ScootrS” to “scootRS” so as to emphasize the pronunciation: scoot RS. The old way was confusing. When we finally get around to the new site design we'll have a better logo.
Lambretta hydraulic disc brake
Oct. 2, 2002, 3:23 PM
Cool. Our Lambretta hydraulic disc brake graces a UK scooter on the front cover of Scootering Magazine for October. Take a look.
°°
In other UK news, some nice emails arrived:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hi scootRS Team,

I recently ordered a few parts for my Li 150 S3 and would like to say “Brilliant” with a big smile. Living in the UK I was a little apprehensive about ordering from a company abroad, not now though. The parts arrived in only 12 days from ordering, the quality is second to none, and the price was almost half of what it would have cost me in the UK. I will certainly be ordering lots more parts for my scooters in the near future. I would without hesitation recommend your company to my scootering friends.

Keep up the good work.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
An electric start SX200 we did was featured in Scootering before. The owner recently took it to the Wickstead Parts Fair:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It was a beautiful day and there were hundreds of scooters there. I parked up with all the others, then hung around to see what people would say about it. [....]

[T]he comments were all to the effect that it was a fantastic restoration and I think it sums it up when one guy said to me (when I made myself known) 'you've got the (dog's) bollocks there mate!'. In slang English, 'the dog's bollocks' means that it's THE BEST!

There were a couple of SX200's (unrestored but only fair condition) on sale at £2600 - so my total cost of £3500, delivered to the UK is a bargain!
