Roadkill: November 2002

London at 5pm
Nov. 27, 2002, 1:44 PM

Are you in London and looking for something to do at 5pm? Someone had the wrong fax number and we now have an invite to join Prof. Zhores Alferov, Nobel Laureate, and the Chairman of Gazprom and others at the establishment of the Global Energy International Prize.

Print out the invite, put on a “lounge suit,” and enjoy free drinks. -And ask Zhores about your gas mileage with a tuned exhaust.

Search
Nov. 20, 2002, 4:17 PM

We've tuned up the search engine to help you get where you're going faster. The search on the navbar has been improved so you can search names only, or name and description. You can narrow the search to Lambretta (L) or Vespa (V) only, if you like. You can even search the Roadkill section there, too. Also improved the results a bit and included pics and prices.

Lambretta bearing
Nov. 19, 2002, 10:57 AM

Some great new items with big savings over typical scooter part prices.

We've added some bearings. Elsewhere a Lambretta SKF flywheelside bearing will cost you $30-45. We sell the exact same one for $24. We also have Japanese bearings which are equally good, only cheaper. We've opened motors years after daily use, and the Japanese are every bit as good as the German.

On a second front, if you are a little perturbed by the idea of paying $50+ for an intake manifold for your Keihin or Mikuni type carburetor, you'll be happy to know that we have added manifolds for both Lambretta and Vespa for $19. -Or you can buy a complete flatslide carb kit for $119, as opposed to $225+ elsewhere.

This is fun. More to come...

Are you a fan of the film Quadrophenia? JollyBig.com has added some of the film's images to their huge collection of posters that can be personalised with your own text. Search for “Quadrophenia”. We just tried out the demo online. Pretty cool.

Holiday presents anyone???

5-port VL1
Nov. 14, 2002, 11:06 PM

OK, let's picture this in final form. A 5-port GOLD VL1 racing through the dark, crowded back streets of Tokyo. Cute girls with cute little backpacks - and those little tartan skirts - dashing about. Fade to a tea house, VL1 parked in front, tea and tartan in the foreground. To be continued...

Lambretta pipe
Nov. 13, 2002, 7:27 PM

We always get our Scootering late. Just saw our stainless Lambretta pipe on pages 44-45, Nov. issue, on a sharp TS1. Take a look.

Nov. 11, 2002, 9:23 PM

Just to mention that we have tuned exhausts back instock, for Lambretta and 125/150cc Vespas. No stainless yet. Hit the “exhaust” link above. -Redesigned with a performance gain and a beautiful and better canister.

We've also added the mufflers/canisters for sale.

Vietnam “original” parts
Nov. 9, 2002, 12:06 PM

A nice pic of an “original” crankshaft on a locally “restored” Vespa we just took apart. And, yes, it ran.

The rest of the “original” items in the motor look about the same: mainshaft spline was welded, flywheel center was welded, head was welded... Oh, and then there were the brakes, which were very interesting, but we'll leave the rest aside.

Refresh
Nov. 7, 2002, 5:37 PM

Just cleaned up some god-forsaken code on the site, mostly to do with the navigation on the side. The previous code pained our soul, not that we got what we wanted due to some legacy requirements. After Godot arrives, we'll include everything in the new site design. (We've likely ruined some styling for nn4 in the process, because we don't have it installed anymore. We're winging it. Let us know if there are any egregious problems. But in any case, for your own sake, go get a new browser. That bug-ridden thing is antique.)

-You'll probably need to refresh the page to get a nice, fresh copy of the js and css. Let us know if any issues.

Carburetor tuning
Nov. 3, 2002, 3:30 PM

We've added some carburetor tuning info to our tech page.

Also came across something on a dirtbike site, talking about Keihin PWK carbs vs. Dell'Orto roundslides (which themselves are better than stock carbs). Excerpts:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Q: Currently I am feeling that the normal Dellorto PHBH 26 BS carburetor cannot produce enough power to clear some obstacles. So I'am thinking about replacing the carburetor with a Keihin PWK 28. Could you please let me know the merits of Keihin, comparing with Dellorto?
A: I think the 28mm Keihin will be just about perfect for your needs. It produces strong, clean power and is fairly easy to tune. The Keihin is a much more sophisticated carb with more advanced features. It compensates for a wide variety of weather changes like altitude and temperature with just a change in needle adjustment. In my opinion, changing over to the 28mm Keihin is one of the best modifications you can do.
GS160
Nov. 1, 2002, 6:42 PM
This should be cool. Let's see: GS160, red with cream trim, whitewalls, P200, electronic ignition, electric start, 24 flatslide, tuned exhaust.... Yes, very cool.
