Roadkill: December 2001

Pre-vacation
Dec. 29, 2001, 4:28 PM

It would appear as though the nap below has somehow traversed international boundaries and we are now mid-flight, crossing the Pacific on the way to Vancouver. Either that or we are dreaming. Until we find out which, enjoy a photo of a friend with friends from our last night in Saigon at the newly re-opened Q-Bar.

Buddhist Christmas
Dec. 27, 2001, 7:54 PM

Well, we're back from a nice little Buddhist Christmas at Angkor. If you've yet to go, I'd suggest you go soon. Dramatic changes in just the past few years due to increased tourism, some for the better, most for the worse. More to follow after a brief nap…

Vietnam bodged scooters on eBay
Dec. 20, 2001, 9:24 PM

Why people buy painted-up Vespas from local Asian shops being resold via auction in the US is beyond us. Have they not researched the issue beforehand? Or read the Scoot! Quarterly review of Asian shops: “Many people have bought scooters from Southeast Asia and been horrified with the results. If some of the scooters I saw were indeed on their way to North America, then I am horrified as well.”? If you are interested in a cheap Vespa, post to a BBS and ask first before bidding, or simply get a good used one that runs well. -Of course, that Scoot! Quarterly review continued: “In contrast to all of this is ScootRS.” In other words, if you want a totally restored 5-port VBB with an electric starter, you've come to the right place.

By massive demand, we've added some pop-up color sample pics to the order pages. Also added some option pics there a few days back, too.

We've added a Photo Library page where you can see past restorations we've done. -Actually, just recent ones for now, but take a look for some inspiration and color checks. We've also changed the Available USA! page to be called Available Now!, with a different url, and we'll list any finished scooters we have in our shop there, as well as any in Oakland, CA. Also changed the What's New page to New Parts, but the url is the same. We stole this setup from the new site because, well, it doesn't look like we'll have it up before the holidays. Enjoy.

Good vibrations
Dec. 19, 2001, 2:18 PM

Either we're getting lazy, or other people are getting funnier. Here's another good post:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1 reason why girls should have Lambrettas
This weekend I rode a Lambretta for the first time. Before I was even halfway down the block I was thinking of ways I could sell my Vespa and get a Lambretta. My best friend was there and always makes fun of me for riding scooters although she's never been on one before. I convinced her to go for a ride with me by telling her I would never tell anyone about it. She climbed onto the back and held on for dear life. A few minutes into our ride I turned around and she was smiling, “fun, huh?” I said. She nodded and yelled in my ear “It feels even better then my vibrator.” Needless to say we're both hooked.
Steven Spielberg didn't order from us
Dec. 18, 2001, 12:25 PM
And here we thought Steve was a daily reader and had read our warning:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Re: Spielberg hurt in scooter wreck!

Article in the paper here in Denver says he was on a Scooter he imported special from Vietnam. He should have done his research and ordered from ScootRS!

Realdoll
Dec. 16, 2001, 11:45 PM

Well, we don't discriminate anyway:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Actually Mark is a Real Doll (realdoll.com) Each Realdoll is hand crafted to exact specifications. They use an exclusive formulation of ultra flesh-like silicone, which emulates the soft, elastic feel of human skin.
Every doll contains an articulated skeleton, with joints that realistically approximate the range of motion found in the human body.
He comes in handy more often then you could imagine!
xoxo
SARAH
: Ok, admit it. You guys have a giant cardboard cutout of Mark. Because he has the same damn smile and stance in almost every photo! I am on to you guys. What have you done to the real live Mark?!?!
Lambretta or Vespa?
Dec. 14, 2001, 3:41 PM
New scooters, but we again face the eternal question: Lambretta or Vespa? Off-white and racing green, or dark blue-gray? You decide. One thing is for certain, though: leather seats are sweet.
LI 150
Dec. 9, 2001, 10:31 PM
Wow, new pics and new ports today. We got so sick of the old photos we couldn't wait for the new site and spent a sunny Sunday at the computer. Check the scooter pages for new pics. -Especially the LI150 page. (And don't ask how much because we're so busy we don't even know yet!)
scootRS Vespa 5-port upgrade
Dec. 9, 2001, 2:25 PM
OK, updating a 1960's Vespa to a 3-port system is a pretty good idea. Piaggio did the same themselves when they got to the Sprint Veloce, and we thus added it as a standard restoration option long ago. (Classic styling, yes, but we've never understood why anyone wants to stick with a bad idea, just because it is “original.”) But we got to thinkin': if 3 ports are cool, then maybe.... We thus announce today that scootRS now offers a 5-port upgrade as an option on our Vespa restorations. (Yes, that's the square root of 25 ports, up from the standard 2.) We have just finished two of them with tuned exhausts - one with an electric starter - and they are damn peppy, we must say. Shift and pull, with no hesitation. Very nice and another scootRS first that is a highly recommended option.
Pretty Lambretta
A couple of pics added to the posts below. Also this Lambretta with a light olive seems to be shaping up to be one of the prettiest we've ever done.
Vespa VBB restoration
Dec. 7, 2001, 4:48 PM
Did we say we'd post this the 5th? In any case, to start, one item we can now offer for VBB restorations is a choice of rubber trim colors: gray, cream, red, or blue. This includes everything, even an original-style rubber center mat. And we also have whitewall inserts again, in plain white - well, more of a cream - or with a red or blue stripe in the middle. 8 inch or 10 inch. So let's see: how about a red VBB with cream seats and rubber trim and whitewall inserts with a red stripe? Or pearl white with blue rubber trim? Hmmm.
°°
For Lambrettas we now have very nice rubber floormats in black as a restoration option. -Ones with raised sections to fit perfectly over the floor rails. And the whitewall inserts fit Lambrettas too, of course. Pics and more to follow.
Lambretta SX200
Dec. 7, 2001, 1:42 PM
An auctioned sx200 was delivered the other day after a little delay by the shipper:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I received the scooter yesterday. First off, nice job crating it. It took me 30 minutes to remove the scooter. It looks amazing. It totally exceeded my expectations. The pictures do not do justice to the detail. Top quality all around. After oil and gas it started on the third kick and I was off. So, all is well that ends well. I could not be any happier with the scooter. I will not hesitate to refer people to your site. You have been a great help and I thank you for that.

Vietnamese bodged scooters
Dec. 6, 2001, 9:34 PM

You may have noticed scooters from local Vietnamese shops being auctioned of late. They do look nice in the pictures. They're even becoming fashionable here amongst some avant garde Vietnamese, when before no fashionable local person would be seen mortified on one. We hadn't visited the local shops for a while, so we stopped by the other day, visiting a few where the bikes sit out ready-to-go and people often buy them to resell overseas. Good god.

We had forgotten how absolutely thorough the lack of attention to any detail whatsoever is. Quite amazing, really. The cracked front shocks were nice, as well as the random rusty bolts hinting at greater wonders inside the engine, but, we must say, our favorite was the use of tape to cover rust holes in the body before painting.

That brought back fond memories of fixing our Datsun 510 in the backyard when we were 17. Surely you remember the lowered orange 2-door flying by you on the road to Whistler with the 2 liter motor, 280z 5-speed tranny, dual Webber carbs, sway bars, and... rusted-out body? And our steering with one hand, leaning out into the freezing cold to clean the window with a squeegee because that damn wiper fluid sprayer never did work, did it? Yes, we thought you might remember that.
