Roadkill: February 2003

Shipping
Feb. 28, 2003, 3:26 PM

The changes come in bunches here. Now Airborne has raised courier charges by adding a 5.1% fuel surcharge. Hopefully that will be temporary. Why EMS to many countries goes down while Airborne goes up is not for us mortals to question.

Oh: we've also spiffed up the bookmarks functionality for you with a bit of magic.

Shipping
Feb. 27, 2003, 12:18 PM

We now have cheaper shipping on EMS 5 day service to many countries including the US, UK, Australia, etc., though it went up for a couple others including Canada.

A “coalition of the willing,” we guess.

Vespa Trojan
Feb. 26, 2003, 10:30 AM

If you are a fan of our Scooter News section below, you'll have seen the story about Vespa teaming up with Trojan condoms. A must read, and be sure to check out the clever “Let's Get it On” and “Ride Safely” ads they've come up with.

We're really enjoying the Scooter News aggragator. Seems to be working quite well after a little tune-up. Interesting to see the contexts in which “Vespa” pops up. And notice how few mentions there are of Lambretta.

scootRS Bookmarks
Feb. 25, 2003, 1:11 PM

We've added a cool little function for you: scootRS Bookmarks. (The link is on the left menu.)

If you regularly go to the same products, you can bookmark them and view them all together on the Bookmark page for fast access.

When going through our website, beside each part number there is now a “BM” link, meaning “Bookmark” that item. Click on it to add that product to the bookmark page. (You'll see a little window pop open and close - that was the bookmark being added.) If you have already added an item, there will be a “--” link to click and remove that bookmark.

Just here to serve. Let us know if any problems with it.

Are you keen on pin-ups?

If so, the motherload can apparently be found here.

Vespa and Lambretta videos
Feb. 19, 2003, 7:57 AM

Do you have DSL? Several films about Vespa and Lambretta scooters and rallies are online courtesy STUFFONFIRE FILMS.

-Ooooh, DSL. Personally, we'd settle for a decent dial-up connection and no power outages.

Scooter News
Feb. 17, 2003, 1:10 AM

As you can see, we've tuned up the Scooter News section at the bottom. Items are now archived and searchable. -And thankfully, if it all goes according to plan - which is unlikely -, we don't have to do much of anything anymore to maintain it. Then again, we already see that one item's date was winged on entry and needs an edit.

(Click refresh to get the latest stylesheet if the boxes look scrunched up. It will be cached for a bit, but you'll see the result on the Scooter News Archives page, or next visit.)

Las Vegas rally - traffic webcams
Feb. 15, 2003, 11:48 PM

That is very funny! Someone figured out that you can use Las Vegas traffic webcams to spot people in Vegas for the big rally.

See this screenshot, or this screenshot, for example.

Very clever.

Dropbars vs. fat naked guy
Feb. 13, 2003, 8:51 AM

So, what do you want to look at today? A picture of a customer's scootRS dropbars with hydraulic disc brake or a huge fat naked guy on a scooter with a pretty girl?

OK, dammit, go look at the fat guy if you want, what do we care.

Scooter review
Feb. 12, 2003, 3:18 PM

A very nice post today from the owner of a scooter we did recently:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I got a Vespa VL1 (handlebar with the lamp on the bars) 150 with 5 ports. From the moment I ordered it the folks at ScootRS kept in close contact with me to make sure they were building EXACTLY the bike I wanted. Randall convinced me to get the 5 ports because, although rebuilt, the engine is an original engine and could use the extra Oomf. I understood from the onset that I was buying a bike with a motor that had been built from parts. After upgrading to the 5 ports and choosing the colour and seat material I wanted, I waited a totally acceptable amount of time until the bike arrived on my shore. I was out of the country when it arrived and because they were so thorough with the paperwork I was able to leave all the importing and shipping issues with a broker in my home town who took care of everything while I was away (without any trouble). I came home to one of the most beautiful looking scooters I've ever had the pleasure of seeing (I've been a scooterist for 12 years) and when it kicked over on the third kick I took off on it and have been beyond happy ever since. The engine runs like new and it's been 6 months since it got here. I have nothing but kudos for ScootRS and the exceptional work they do there. Five stars, 120% satisfaction.
Glad you're happy. Sharp suit, by the way. And the martini looks even better.
So, the kids are off to Vegas from all over North America and even the UK for a big rally.
But we won't say it. No, we won't. No, everyone always says it... OK, what the hell:
Vegas, baby!
Scooter tech links
Feb. 5, 2003, 11:49 AM
In case you haven't noticed, we have added more tech links and info lately, mostly related to what we are regularly asked.
Also, if you haven't noticed, were still closed until next week. Nonetheless, yours truly is trying to answer a few emails between naps.
And if you still haven't noticed, we've put the 2003 scootRS Calendar on sale for $5! Five glossy poster-size pages of scooters and models.
Chuc Mung Nam Moi!
Feb. 1, 2003, 10:22 AM
Chuc Mung Nam Moi!
Fireworks on the river last night, huge crowds, then scootering through the dark streets after midnight, with sparks flying towards you from burning incense and the new year's luck people were shepherding home from the crowded pagodas.
And, of course, we should probably also mention li xi, Ong Tao, the kitchen god, why you don't want a single pregnant woman showing up at the house today, and...
°°
We will be closed all next week in Vietnam for Tet (New Years). We'll try to answer some emails, though. (If you pay online you can still get North American orders shipped normally.)
